Cycling regulations in Gozo
Cyclists must follow Malta's Highway Code and the Low-powered Vehicles and Pedal Cycles Regulations: ride on the left, obey all traffic signals, and use hand signals when turning. Your bike must be equipped with a bell, front and rear lights, and reflectors, particularly important at dawn, dusk or in poor weather.
Wearing a helmet is not legally required for adults, but it is strongly recommended, especially on hilly or coastal roads. Children must wear one at all times. Note that cycling is not permitted in tunnels.
In practice, Gozo is far more pleasant for cycling than Malta's main island. Its country roads are quiet, traffic is light, and the island (roughly 15 km long and 7 km wide) can be comfortably covered in a day. There are no zones where cycling is formally restricted on Gozo. The centre of Victoria (Rabat) can get congested during peak hours, so we recommend locking up and continuing on foot there.
One useful practical note: you can bring your rental bike on the Gozo ferry, which is handy if you are combining both islands on your trip.
Tips before renting a bike in Gozo
Inspect the bike at pick-up
Check for signs of damage or unusual wear. Make sure brakes and chain are in good condition. Take photos and share them with the owner via the BikUp chat, it protects both of you.
Choose the right type of bike
Gozo is hilly, with gradients of 15 to 20% common on coastal roads. An e-bike or gravel bike is often a better choice than a road bike if you plan to cover the whole island. Ask the owner what they recommend for your route.
Plan around the heat
Ride in the morning or late afternoon, especially in summer. Bring enough water, sunscreen and sunglasses. The best seasons for cycling in Gozo are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November).
Ask for local route tips
BikUp owners are Gozo-based cyclists. They know which roads are quiet, where the climbs are rewarding, and which tracks require a gravel or MTB. Their advice is one of the real advantages of renting locally.
Bring a lock
Bike theft is rare in Gozo, but basic precautions still apply. A lightweight lock is always worth carrying, especially if you plan to stop and explore villages or cliff paths on foot.
Check your insurance
Cycling insurance is not legally required in Malta, but it is worth checking your existing travel or home insurance policy before you ride, especially for longer rides or gravel terrain.
